Employee Spotlight is a series that spotlights the awesome people who work at Homesnap, how they got their job here and what they love about being part of this team. This week, we chatted with Android developer Luis Mierez, who’s worked at Homesnap since 2014.
Tell us about your career. How did you find your way to Homesnap?
I moved to DC from San Diego in 2014 with my wife. We had just gotten married and she got a job here, and I had just gotten out of school. I was looking for jobs and met Lou [Mintzer, CPO at Homesnap] at a DC Tech event and shared some projects with him and ended up getting a job here.
How did you become an Android developer?
I got into Android originally as a side thing when I was getting my music degree. However, I realized that I really like making apps, so now I do the music thing on the side.
What is your proudest moment at Homesnap so far?
Our latest listing ads release that we did. The fact that we released that and there don’t seem to be any bugs, no issues, or anything like that … it’s a miracle from a lack of sleep.
What are three words you’d use to describe Homesnap as a company?
Driven, fun — it’s a boring word to describe us, but it’s a good place to work, everybody works really hard — and close. We’re like a small family.
What is the most important innovation you’ve seen in your lifetime?
I’m an Android Developer, so I’d have to say smartphones.
What is the greatest challenge you’ve had to overcome in your life?
Moving to the US and getting used to the language and culture. It took awhile to get used to school, and I didn’t do well in school. We had to move to Texas and there was a big language barrier. I was 14 and it was a big change.
We know you’re really into craft beer. If you could only drink one beer for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That’s a tough question. My favorite is Anderson Valley Blood Orange Gose. It’s very refreshing and great for drinking in the summer.
What are your top three life highlights?
Moving to the US, getting married, and having my son, Isaac.
What is your favorite snack in the Homesnap pantry?
I’m really addicted to donuts, but not so much snacks.
